WSBK takes over MyNetworkTV affiliation in Boston

WSBK to put it bluntly stinks in my opinion. Back in the '80s, yes way back there, TV 38, as it was known, had a great lineup and was a true New England fixture on television. Most, if not all, cable systems in the northeast had WSBK and it was very popular. It had the Red Sox and Bruins, as well as tons of great syndicated programming and great movies, including The Movie Loft every night. I'm not sure exactly when it started to go down hill, but I can tell you I haven't watched anything on WSBK for a long time. Almost all of the programming is uninteresting and not worth the time especially when there are much better choices out there. UPN was a flop and its partnership with WBZ in the market didn't help either. MyNetworkTV is not going to help because it doesn't offer much and it even goes against the station's branding as a true independent (I realize MyNetworkTV does not consider themselves as a network, but it is in the eyes of most people who watch its programming). Both WSBK and WLVI, channel 56 in Boston, were once powerful and very entertaining independents that are not even shadows of their former selves now. However, you could say that about almost all television stations. Few, whether they be broadcast stations or cable/satellite, are nothing like they used to be. How about MTV? Music Television? How much actual music is on this station? The Learning Channel (TLC)? I remember when you could actually learn something on this station. Bravo? I remember when it was a PAY fine arts channel and actually had decent programming. I could go on and on...my point being that television in general has declined to the point that it is almost not even worth tuning in...back in the 80s when there were far less choices, there was actually much more to watch. Goodbye TV 38 we miss you.
It was announced last night during the "WBZ News at 9" that WSBK would be joining My Network TV in the Fall of 2011. Kate Merrill (aka the "Giggling News Anchor), stammered through the statement about 9:10 last night. I think that means no more WBZ news on TV 38 unless they move it to either 10 PM or 7 PM.
As for WBIN, I thought I heard that Bill Binnie was planning to start an all-news TV operation, called "New Hampshire One." Not sure if that is going to fly- an all news operation would cost a fortune. Plus, while Southern New Hampshire has experienced dramatic growth in the last 20 years, is there really that much news that would be noteworthy to fill up a broadcast day? With the My Network TV affiliation, WZMY was a marginal operation. Now WBIN-TV does not even have that. Does anyone think the future of WBIN is "all infomercials or home shopping?" Its a shame- I really miss the old days of WNDS with the classic reruns and Al's weather.

I wonder what percentage of people are even aware there is something called My Network TV or that it is a national network program supplier. WBIN has lost pretty much nothing by shedding the My TV branding. There is nothing unique about My TV's shows that can't be replaced with similar syndicated fare.
Hopefully WSBK will just add the My TV shows and not fiddle with their branding.
BTW, the TiVo program guide has changed their listing from WZMY to WBIN. The Charter cable guide has not, nor have any newspapers I've checked.

The old 38 was great! In addition to hockey, baseball, and the movie loft don't forget the Odd Couple and "Ask the Manager". Joe Dimino & Dana Hersey provided great entertainment.
It's too bad Boston sports have gone totally cable (many markets still provided a schedule of local OTA professional games).
The new 38 is Giggling Merrill at 9PM (the lovefest around 9:15PM between her and the weather guy Todd is extremely unprofessional) The "food guys" with their best cheeseburger, pub food, pizza is a total waste of airtime. The addtion of MY TV only adds to that.
Is there no interest in ME TV or Antenna TV?

Locally (which means in the Northeast) Both New York Baseball teams are available OTA. The Yankees are on WWOR MY 9 in NYC. (The games are produced by the team's network YES). They carry around 25 games a year. (Mostly on Tuesdays). I don't know who else is on the network aside from WCTX 59 "MY TV 9" in New Haven, Connecticut. The METS are on PIX 11 in NYC. There are more METS games than Yankees games OTA. Most METS games on PIX 11 are on Fridays and/or Sundays. I don't know who else is on the network aside from WCCT-TV "The CT"/WTIC-TV "FOX Connecticut". (They are both owned by Tribune). Ironically The Yankees used to be on WPIX and The METS on WWOR.
The Mets/WPIX and Yankees/WWOR nets both have affiliates all across upstate NY. Here in Rochester, the games air either on WHAM-TV 13 (ABC) or WHAM's 13.2 CW channel, usually the latter. Every once in a while, a conflict pushes a game to Time Warner Cable's local sports channel.
For a few years, most of the other affiliates across upstate were Pax stations, but they've gotten away from doing any kind of "local" programming. I've lost track of who has the baseball packages now in most of the upstate markets, except for Binghamton, where they show up on "WBPN"/WICZ 40.2 (MyNetwork).
It's still a far cry from the old days of a full Mets season on WOR-TV and a full Yankees season on WPIX. It's just a handful of SNY and YES games with a different logo in the corner.

Well Hearst signed a deal to add MeTV to their stations, but not solid word yet on WCVB or WMUR, although it's already "live" on several of their other stations.

Branding won't change. They will keep "the Block" as it is right now. MNTV will be incorporated into the Block programming.
Many MNTV affils around the country like ch.64 in Providence run it outside of prime like 11:30 or 12:35 at night. Expect similar arrangement in Boston.
Also, who said 38's news at 9 is signing off? There hasn't been any announcement and none is expected.
