Z93 stunting!

From Wikipedia.org

The station in Richmond owned by Mainline.

WWLB (98-9 Liberty) is a gold-based variety hits format radio station in the U.S. state of Virginia. Owned by MainLine Communications, the station signed on Labor Day 2005 from the same tower as WCDX and WRXL.

Arbitron, the radio ratings service, has completed it's 1st survey to include the ALL NEW Classic hits WWLB. WWLB's debut is huge, all the way to the #2 ranked station in Richmond with the advertiser coveted A25-54 demographic. This is the Fall '05 survey.

Well, it seemed to have worked there. Who's to say Z93 isn't going to relaunch as CHR, but under a new name? If they don't do it now, they'll do it later like what happened with B94 in Pittsburgh. Doubtful now though because the jocks left. They would've stayed if it was CHR.

I havent been to Hagerstown for quite sometime, but I know that Mainline has a very very successful operation under their control. The stations they purchased from Dame were very good performers, but all the research did was offered them insight on making it much stronger cluster for them. Some companies do this to only strengthen their cluster.

Mainline Dayton was in a bit of a sticky situation. The cluster in a round about way was falling apart. Demos were down huge, marketing was not even available and their revenue wasnt even on the radar. What research provided Mainline was a blueprint to not dominate, but strengthen the cement foundation under their stations and find new, exciting ways to attract new business and new money to the stations.

One thing I might as well reveal is that Dayton most severely has asked, in the past...and now, for a third choice in the Contemporary field. Mix and Lite do extremely well and they also share a LOT of mulah! They roll in the money and the Women 25-54 demo. Z93, HOT and 92.1 dont fare so well in that key demo. They do okay, but not acceptable in Arlington's standards.

Dayton has asked for a CONTEMPORARY VARIETY station (which would be a female leaning Adult Hits) and ironically for a MODERN AC/ALTERNATIVE station which brings to mind something like 94.9 The Sound and Q102 merging together, which at first I find odd...but there are stations out there presenting this product, and its working!

Another option is for Dayton to get "fresh". Something Clear Channel has totally missed the boat on is protecting the cash cow known as WLQT and really even WMMX. If someone had a newer, fresher, hipper AC format...it could quite possibly smear the tar out of Clear Channel, and I think they realize that now.

There are a lot of options at hand with this new station. Mainline is smart, they will follow their research as they have done in Richmond and will eventually do in Louisville Q1 of 2008. Mainline will also invest in marketing...and they dont own billboards so its not a free ride for them. They are in this for radio sake...and we should be happy that atleast someone cares about this business still.

By them calling theirselves 92.9 it makes you have a feeling that they may be leaning in an Adult Alternative direction, kinda like Dave 92.9 in Atlanta. But thats something that takes a lot of marketing and money to build, so if I were a betting man at 2AM, i would have to bet on

92.9 THE RIVER - WE PLAY EVERYTHING

Core station focus is on the 1990's with sampling of the 80's and currents. Why not 80's? Mix owns that target, Lite owns the 70's. No one owns the 90's and Dayton is still a much younger market than most its size.

It is truly a sad day. I grew up with Z93 in the 90's and even worked there briefly part time, albeit long after the glory days. I just can't get used to the idea of a Z93-less Dayton.

Best wished to the former staff

For Dayton radio's sake, this is the most exciting thing I can remember happening in years. If Mainline did their research right(I've heard rumors that it was in the six digit $$$ range)they'll have a winner on their hands. Z-93 was a victim of NOT ONLY 94.5, but let's not forget that 102.9 stole some of their listeners away back in August 2001 when they ditched WING-FM for CHR/Rhythmic HOT 102.9. With 94.5 as a flanker and HOT chipping away at it with a similar format, I knew, I just knew that Z's days were numbered. I did hold out a little glimmer of hope when they brought back the WGTZ Eaton Dayton and Springfield alive! top of the hour ID, but it was a good way to send Z out.
I would like to wish all of Z's now former airstaff good luck! I did a little volunteer work with Mallory and Campy for a few months back in 2003...I wish them nothing but the best. Frye and Scott are nice guys as well. I heard that Scott is PD of HOT now since the exit of Reggie Beas...Good for him.
I also did a Tribute Site to Z-93 which no longer exists(I had to take it down due to cost concerns)and was able to live vicariously through many former Zeejays from the 80s and 90s and now. Thanks to all who took a few minutes to talk with me!
Also i'd like to mention a tidbit I remembered from when I interviewed John King(First ever Zeejay/PD/Morning Host)that he told me that Z-93 launched at 12 Noon on Sunday, March 15, 1984...Last song on the then-WJAI was "Duncershane" (Not sure on that spelling!)by Wayne Newton and the first song on Z was "Footloose" by Kenny Loggins. I believe the second song was "Jump" by Van Halen...I never have been able to track down a tape of Z-93's launch.
It'll be interesting to hear the new format on 92.9. I'm willing to bet on maybe a "Fresh"-type station or Adult Hits(I'll have my tape machine rolling at noon today)...I wonder if they'll resurrect those heritage WING-FM calls? 92.9 WING-FM sounds good to me, or maybe 92.9 The Flight(I would somehow incorporate Dayton's aviation heritage).

Z-93 inthe 1980s was great! They had a huge promotion called "Ten Thousand and Ninety Three In A Row" after the WJAI calls and nostalgia format was dropped in 1985.

King and Dorsey moved from WING-AM to do the first "Z-morning Zoo" but it was "Dr. Dave" Gross(now with oldies WLDE in Ft. Wayne) and Wild Bill that made the station.
Kim Faris was there from the get-go..when it was WJAI playing country in 1979-80.

I guess I never knew how good I had it until it's gone. I always was quick to bash Z93 and go for 945. Well... i regret it now.
I barely listened to Z in its final days as well lovejamminoldies, so I also regret not being fully behind Z in what turned out to be its final days. I guess we learned the hard way to love how good we have it until it's gone...Somebody cue up the Cinderella tune from the 80s lol...
I also wonder if 94.5 will become more of a mainstream CHR, ala WNCI in Columbus...Time will tell. Since Z is RIP now, might they focus more on just Top 40 instead of trying to compete with Hot?

G101.3 from Richmond bleeds all over 101.5. I would love an oldies station. Thats why I listen to MIX 1077 on the weekends.

The only problem with Channel is that they need to step out of Mix's way and being a WNCI-like station may hurt MMX. We shal see though.

I plan to see 3 stations in ready mode at 12:00. The new 92.9 obviously. 1029 leaning toward pop. 945 also possibly leaning toward a pop feel to steal Z93's core. Anybody?

Perhaps the Christmas Lite? Diversionary tactic.

They would've done that at midnight I would think. It also depends on what 92-9 ends up becoming.

You're the expert.
