106.1 the breeze

This skews heavily toward 2010s and recent music. It’s hard to differentiate this type of playlist from that of other AC stations throughout the country. This does not give me a compelling reason to listen to the Breeze anymore.

I respect your opinion, but notice I said, "To me, but probably not to many others, it makes the Breeze less compelling." As such, my comments apply only to my taste.

I have nothing against Dua Lipa and I like her music. But I can hear it in many other places. I can't hear Richard Marx, the Commodores, or Tina Turner in too many other places.

Yes yes yes! this!
They start off soft, then get hotter.
Seems to me this happens with any AC station that has tried to launch around here.
This is why I said earlier... Let the B do the upbeat, and let 106.1 be softer/slower.
John

The thing is I like both AC's.
but sometimes I want a softer older slower feel, and other times I'm down with the more CHR-like approach.

Because the softer they go, the older the audience.

And the older the audience, the harder it is to sell, the less money the station pulls in.
But I don't really get that either, because that makes it sound like people over 55 don't spend money.
Or is it not so much that, but advertising focuses on new things to try and the over 55 croud is set in their ways?

A little from column A, a little from column B, a little from….

Data says it takes more 💰 in spending to persuade older consumers with brand preferences more entrenched. So that’s not a great thing for advertisers. Lower ROI tends not to be where you want to invest.

But while you obviously open up some categories, you also lose out on some others that attract budgets. Stuff for kids and younger families for instance.

It’s just not a desirable audience to sell.

I don’t think The Breeze is going to or trying to be as edgy as B. They’re doing what they have to in order to sell the station, which means mixing in more recent music (which, honestly, except for a few is quite soft and non-offensive) while still trying to lean in to the softer 80s and 90s titles to try not to alienate that audience too much. Very thin needle to thread, but this is the most potential 106.1 has had in a long time.

Overall, The Breeze still leans older and softer than most mainstream AC’s, especially in large markets.

SiriusXM has a channel called “The Blend” that a lot of you may like: The Blend Recently Played and Playlist - xmplaylist

I liked the original Breeze and streamed it regularly. But I am trying to be real here in that it was not a format that would demo-wise be viable long term, the evolution was inevitable.

I understand the rationale, but like others who have responded to this post, I like the original, softer, “older” Breeze better too. The reasons: Music one can’t hear anywhere else.

I think that looking at the list of their 20 most-played songs may give the wrong impression. It's not like you're going to flip on 106.1 for an hour and hear those. You may hear one or two in that hour but the rest of the time will be filled with the other 200 songs which play less frequently, and which there are obviously more of, and which are softer/older. A better indication of what the station is sounding like would be sample hour. And just like that...
  • Tonight, Tonight, Tonight / Genesis (seriously, they are OBSESSED with Phil Collins 🤣)
  • Daniel / Elton John
  • Hero / Mariah Carey
  • Into the Groove / Madonna
  • Bad Day / Daniel Powter
  • I'll Make Love To You / Boyz II Men
  • Dark Horse / Katie Perry
  • Kiss On My List / Daryl Hall & John Oates
  • Dancing With a Stranger / Sam Smith
  • Fast Car / Tracy Chapman
  • Brave / Sara Bareilles
  • Have I Told You Lately / Rod Stewart
  • Even the Nights Are Better / Air Supply
  • Memories / Maroon 5
It's almost all older and softer than anything you could get on 101.1. Looking at the list of their most-spun, one would never imagine they're going to also hear Air Supply and Rod Stewart.

Just to put a finer point on my...uh...point: The Breeze is adding some more upbeat titles that they know the intended audience wants to hear along with the main format--which remains largely (hugely) Soft AC.

EDIT: Yes, I am aware that I used the phrases "flip on" and "most-spun." Old habits die hard.

Totally good points. Context matters. A most player list is not necessarily the best way to gauge the overall tone in this case. The gold titles as a whole will far outweigh the smaller selection of newbies.

I mean, hey, spin 15 different Phil Collins tunes, or whatever it is, vs 1 Dua Lipa and things may look skewed.

106.1 just played “Hotel California” by the Eagles and followed it up with “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt and lastly “Material Girl” by Madonna.

This is a mix I never heard played in a row before!

Sounds very "BEN-FM" to me.
