91.5 on the air

In the middle of all those 80's songs...the Beatles? Uh...ok.

I keep tuning in out of curiosity too. The format is great! And the signal isn't half bad either. But why did I hear 2 different Christmas songs in 2 hours? Wondering if the station is just stuck on some computer playlist that they made last month?

Heather

I finally got the chance to listen to the station.Great selections and lots of"rare"tunes!Do you fellas know when the music will stop?

I was listening to 91.5 a few nights ago and really enjoying it...yes, even the surprising Beatles tune thrown into the 80' s- heavy mix. I didn't even mind the few Christmas songs -- despite the fact that it's after New Year's -- perhaps because it's refreshing to hear Christmas music as spice rather than being bombarded with it in more-typical approach.

Anyway, I then heard a 70's tune I don't particularly care for, "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight." OK, fine, that's the price of real variety. But it was followed by another 70's soft AC tune. Then another. Then another. I was working with the radio on, and it was at least an hour of 70's soft AC. Then back to the mostly-delightful mix with more than a few "oh wows," which is what I've heard ever since then.

Anyway, in general it puts our local commercial AC's and Hot AC to shame musically. (For that matter, so do many retail stores and restaurants...) And it has a decent signal, to boot! Sad commentary on the state of AC in Columbus vs. other markets. This is what 93.3 COULD have been, or even 97.1 (although their "anytime weekends" are often pretty decent -- don't know if they're set to continue, though... and Sunny's weekends can be pretty enjoyable, if older-music-skewed, at times.) Too bad non-comm 91.5 can't possibly keep going with this approach.

Has anyone else heard the hour-long blocks of 70's soft AC on 91.5, or was that an aberration?

Funny you should mention this ... I agree with you concerning the music selection at retail stores ... Staples comes to mind and I often find myself hanging around out there longer than normal when there is a run of songs I want to listen to. Giant Eagle and Home Depot do a good job as well.

Yes they are more pleasing than Columbus stations.

Disagree about the 91.5 signal. At my office on South High Street .... literally looking at the WSYX Tower, I can't get squat on my Sony portable radio.

Eastern Orthodox Christmas and Byzantine Catholic Christmas is January 7th. Could this be a reason why the xmas music stays?

I found this website when searching extensively for any more information about the 91.5 frequency.

After finding their FCC application online, I was able to get even more info using the call letters. I really appreciate all the info you guys have provided. This is a GREAT 80's station, but do realize a lot will change.
While I hope they do keep playing nothing but awesome 80's music, the format may be totally different once they get themselves established. Jingles, PSA's, commercials, and LIVE DJ's soon will follow.

For now (and hopefully from now on), they play the BEST music of any FM station in Columbus. They have a VERY good signal (15,000 watt directional) which seems to be pointed to the North. I live in Hilliard and I'm impressed with not only the range, but the clean sound. Rob knows what he's doing.

The signal can't be on at full power. I cannot pick it up on some radios that get WCBE loud and clear. Similar power and locations for their transmitters. Also, would Rob actually be able to create a non-comm community music station and survive? Who knows? I'm doubting that will be the outcome.

Good point ...... WCBE is only 11,000 watts at 581 feet; WHKC is 15,000 watts at 750 feet. You would think they'd have a better sounding signal than WCBE.

WHKC was granted a License on 01-09-07 and should be up to full by power now.

They have a directional antenna pattern which seems to have a null out towards the South and West of their tower site. That should explain why the WHKC signal is not good in these directions from their antenna site but best towards the north and north-east of their tower site.

Going up Grandview Ave Thursday night, there was lots of fading in and out of the stereo.

On the drive down to Cincinnati yesterday afternoon, got a signal through the Fayette/Clinton Co. line, but again mostly with no stereo. The signal seems comparable in range to that of The Brew. WCBE had a stronger signal and pretty much had the range of the other full-power FM's in the city ..... at least according to my Bose FM stereo!

Crummy stereo generator maybe? Too much noise in the system can ruin stereo separation and make things drop into mono too soon.

Naaaaah! The signal didn't have the same "umph" that WCBE had. And remember, WCBE has less wattage and is on a shorter stick!

could it be because they use a Jampro antenna?

I remember someone in the 70's had a real problem with a Jampro antenna and could never seem to get one that gave them the signal and sound they wanted.

The Jampro antenna isn't going to affect the sound of the audio...that is clearly something else, although I also am not a fan of Jampro.

I rather like listening to the station, confused as it might be, it's a welcome change to the crap that is noramally played.

I guess the STL, or whatever they are using isn't that good, a lot of times it sounds like internet, or they just haven't matched the later processing many of the stations use. Still, I listen, cause they are playing some things I like to hear in the daytime, i skip them at night...thats gets really strange.

Speaking of STL's and stuff, what is the deal with 989 lately? they have problems since they went with whatever new system they use fromt their new location.

Let me guess, that cheap harris box??

If it involves the word CHEAP, it's definitely an option at Radio One!

Seems to have a good signal all the to bellefontaine! Also, not that there's a pirate on 91.7 broadcasting some islam stuff...might be part 15, but not sure. It's right around the nbc4 studios. Now just get some jocks on there[91.5].
