Chad Benson Show on KRLD

I hope KRLD regrets this decision and reverses course in a year or so.
The audience that was chased away by this likely won't ever come back because it's an AM station. The overhead is much, much less running D-list conservative talkers.

And honestly? I'm surprised that KRLD lasted as long as they did with the all-news-all-day format.

It's expensive to be all-news. But KRLD 1080 is among Audacy's best billing stations in Dallas. Because it can run more spots as a News station, it can bill more.

BTW, as a hurricane was raining down on parts of Texas this week, with fatalities, did Chad Benson still do his regular show? Conservatives always good, Democrats always bad. Or did KRLD stay with storm coverage?

A new update on KRLD. The station is also taking 10 a.m. to noon away from the All-News format. The former anchor of the morning news, Mike Rogers, will be doing a "long form, news-oriented talk show" according to Inside Radio. A new anchor has been named to host 5 to 10 a.m. And PM Drive remains from 3 to 8 p.m.

get the feeling KRLD-AM is flipping to Conservate Newstalk radio to compete with WBAP, KSKY, KLIF and KFXR. that means people who got their news from 1080 without the need of talk should just go online for news or tune to the local TV stations' newscasts when they air for news.

I don't know Mike Rogers' political bent, but he never sounded hard right on the air before so maybe his show won't be as political.

This is really disappointing on three fronts.

1) If you're going to do an All-News format and you don't have much money, at least you do it all during the day on weekdays. AM Drive, Middays, PM Drive. If you break it up, people will fall out of the All-News routine. Nobody's gonna remember, "Okay, if I want news, I'll tune in from morning to noon and 3pm to evening."

2) Why in the world did they choose Chad Benson? He's a mid-level syndicated show that has no clearances in large markets. He's not burning up NYC. He's not breaking new ground in LA. If you're going to ruin your All-News All-Day rule, you do it for HIM? You do it for someone whose syndicator is Radio America?

3) I'm no Chad Benson expert. But I'm guessing he's a standard issue "Republicans Always Right, Democrats Always Wrong, Trump Good, Biden Bad" conservative talk show host. I see from his publicity photo he's about 40 and has tattoos. So maybe he's being billed as "Conservative Talk's Next Generation" or something like that. Which is never true because his syndicator knows he won't get good ratings if older people who like conservative radio don't listen.

Why would you put this guy on an All-News station? People who like All-News Radio are likely not that conservative. If they want conservative talk, WBAP is now on both AM and FM. Or you can listen to 570 KLIF. Or 660 KSKY. Or 1190 KFXR. Four existing Conservative Talk stations.

Why not just run Dave Ramsey? He is a big name in talk radio. And he doesn't do a political show, at least not overtly political. Move him up from late night to middays if you must. You already have him on your station.
You just blew it out of the water this could apply to a lot of different stations decisions to put certain hosts on.

Exactly if they convinced every listener to not listen to this station until they went back to all news it would not only encourage them to not flip to more conservative talk shows but also probably return that time slot to news radio...... People don't seem to understand this at large at least.

I think he's doing the right thing. I suppose Rex Ravita doesn't have a mortgage and family to support, so he can resign on principle. Good for him!

I just don't understand why a News Radio station, even if it wants to cut costs, would put a pro-Trump, conservative talk show host on in middays. It could have easily moved Dave Ramsey into Noon to 3pm. That's when the show is done live anyway. Ramsey is one of the most popular syndicated talk shows and it's not political. KRLD already runs Ramsey at night. It could simply take him live, then run CBS Eye on The World in late nights, which is also not a right-wing show. And since KRLD is a CBS Radio affiliate, it would take little effort to add Eye on The World to its schedule.

As I said before, an All-News station shouldn't run a polarizing show, either on the right or left.
They probably want to at least keep it live and local..... because this is a market specific version of the show. Even if it is a Trump type of maga right themed broadcast. And Dave Ramsey is based out of Nashville area so that wouldnt fit into the vision of their station probably.

They had a Houston based reporter who filed updates on the regular. Me.

Changes happen for one reason: financial reasons. Obviously the midday all News at KRLD was getting less attention from advertisers so a change was made. Will this work? Maybe. Maybe not. The point is, you don't fix the kitchen sink when it is doing what it is supposed to do (aka, working fine) but only when it needs fixing.

News stations tend to be talk after evening drive to 6am and on weekends. The ratings are good and almost all of the former all news stations, in a couple of years, are news is in morning drive only. Later morning drive goes talk. Ratings remain good and usually increase as talk takes over.

KRLD has been all News for many, many years (at least weekdays)...40+ I think. It has been the most stable and successful format. Moving to Dallas in 1969, KRLD was on my radar when they went Top 40 about 1971 or 1972. Jon Dillon brought in Coca Cola to sponsor a 2 hour album rock show called Montage from 7 to 9 daily. In a short time KRLD was Top 40 and Album Rock all night. For a few years, KRLD was beautiful music. In fact, I think the switch was from beautiful music to all news.

Mid-days are getting less attention from advertisers in all formats, not just news. That's so many stations have replaced local mid-day shows with either syndication or unhosted music. Same with after 7PM. Same with weekends.

"All News All Day" was actually HALF of their slogan when that began. The other half was "Beautiful Music All Night"

I remember that liner! That goes back a ways but then again I recall KRLD as far back as 1969 as a 7th grader. I didn't care for the music and actually liked KXOL over KFJZ and KLIF for my top 40 fix. I opted for KFAD in Arlington for my album rock.

Then you might remember the flashing light on the KRLD sign as you drove along the John Carpenter Freeway. It would illuminate when the news was on. Network or Local. Pretty cool to my young eyes.

When I hear Chad Benson I'll turn the station or just turn off the radio... "Like I've always said" he's just too condescending and kind of annoying. He never takes live phone calls and just replies to emails and messages... "like I've always said" maybe doesn't like confrontations but "like I've always said" he can dish it out but... "like I've always said".....

this is why I turn him off.

I’ve heard Chad toss out the phone number but have also never heard him take a call. (Granted I don’t listen that much) but maybe nobody is calling in to the show?!

And regarding the new morning show. What exactly is Joe Kelley’s job? He’s like a buffer. He just does teases and tosses to the other anchors for the news reads. Fans from his old gig said “you’ll love Joe Kelly” but I just don’t get the hype. I miss Mike Rogers.

I am a fan of this guy Chad Benson. Heard him when I went to Tulsa. Like Joe Kelley too. Perhaps it is time for KRLD to get a fresh coat of paint? May not be to your liking, but it may just be time to DEMO DOWN 1080am a smidge. I still maintain there is an FM in it's future. Gotta be.

From the above article:

“Will’s unique perspective on today’s top headlines..."

Who are they kidding? They all say the same thing about the same stuff.

This guy is a washed up Hollywood actor who found a new career preaching to the converted.

But yes he was born in the Dallas area and went to UT. A long time ago. I doubt this will be a Dallas-specific show.

Perhaps his unique perspective comes from standing on his head while reading the Dallas Times Herald.

(Yes, I know the Times-Herald is defunct. That's part of the joke.)
