DG makes a few additions

Both "Exodus" and "The Apartment" by Ferrante and Teicher will play during the "local option" breaks. "Autumn Leaves" by Roger Williams is heard pretty regularly, but I think it's on the full playlist and not just played during optional breaks.

I also heard "Broken Hearted Melody" this morning. It's a perfect fit.
I know "Exodus". Could be "The Apartment".

Is "Sentimental Lady" by Bob Welch new? There was a lot of this sort of thing this morning, but a lot of real standards too.

No "Sentimental Lady" has been around for many months now.

Friday was a really good day, at least when I was listening.

Today, I heard three new versions of standards, which is unusual in the short time I spend listening. The clock radio turns itself off after two hours, and it really comes on for Mike Huckabee's five-minute 8:30 broadcast, which is reminiscent of those Paul Harvey was doing not so long ago If I turn the radio on, I'll forget to turn it off before I leave.

I also heard Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me".

Nothing unusual today, though now that I rake leaves instead of mowing, my wlk is longer since raking doesn't feel like sufficient exercise, and the clock radio has been cutting off in the middle of "Senior Moment", a feature for senior citizens that lasts about as long as a commercial but is preceded by a commercial for a retirement community. This is because I tried to turn it off so I could hear "Car Talk" and couldn't, so I unplugged it. Now it comes on ten minutes early and cuts off ten minutes early; I probably should replace the backup battery if it can't keep time any better than that. I'll fix it when I reset the time this weekend. Normally, I get to hear the next two songs and sometimes the start of a third.

I'll bet they play "Spooky" by Classic IV. I know "Monster Mash" was in the Stardust playlist.

I do wish they'd quit playing Simply Red's annoying version of "If You Don't Know Me by Now" and just play Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. But at least I've never heard Michael Bolton.

The local affiliate, incidentally, played "She Loves You" by The Beatles last week. ::) And that's on the all-request portion of the morning show.

I've never paid quite so much attention to "Dreams". I believe Stevie Nicks is singing with herself by way of technology. Of course, that seemed to be true with Olivia Newton-John and Karen Carpenter too. Christine McVie just has a totally different voice. She may have done some vocals on that song but not any that I could hear.

This morning, (7:06) Jeff played "Night Fever" -- Bee Gees. First time I've heard them play it.

THIS morning... just before 7, was Heatwave by Martha & the Vandellas!!

Not good, but not outrageous. With oldies stations evolving into classic hits, this is one of those songs that might not be heard anywhere without adult standards taking it.

The standards station I listened to back in '97, during their "chimpanzee period", as I call it (and yes, that does mean what you think it does) played Little Richard. Now Stardust had "Rock around the Clock" but I don't think DG does, and oldies stations have pretty much abandoned the 50s.

Regarding my local affiliate, one morning they played "Somebody to Love" by Jefferson Airplane. No way, no how, not gonna happen, wouldn't be prudent at this juncture.

I keep hoping they'll dump "You Can Do Magic" by America. Just because it's by America doesn't mean it fits. I've even heard it after a good Christmas song. Train wreck. I heard it a second time too, after Christmas music had started. There is so much good music and they have to throw this in.

Last week while traveling, I heard "All Night Long" by Lionel Richie. I like the song, but after hearing that and reading this thread, I think the evidence is in that the Dial-Global "Adult Standards" product has crossed the threshold into solid Adult Contemporary territory.

No, Stardust did that one.

"My One and Only Love" by Doris Day played this afternoon about 2:30 CT. It's from an new album with some previously unreleased music such as this one.

If I remember correctly this was recorded in 1985, in it's entirety, there are no new recordings, I believe that's what i Read a while back......released recently in memory of her late son Terry Melcher...I haven't heard it But I beleive he did a couple of duets with her or backgound vocals, something like that, maybe.

That's encouraging. Maybe they'll play "Que Sera Sera" again. My local station, which is actually more open to songs that are oldies rather than standards when it is local, played that one the other day.

I don't know where the morning DJ has been the past week, but he needs to come back. I was relieved when I heard him calling a basketball game on Saturday, and they do still have station IDs saying he is on in the morning, but he has been AWOL on the morning show. I am relieved at least that there's someone there so I can hear Mike Huckabee, but "If You Leave" by OMD? Plus the man keeps talking about how the station played top 40 when he first went to work there, and such-and-such was popular then. So? Your boss does the six most requested songs each morning after Mike Huckabee, and your listeners actually want what Jeff Rollins is playing! Plus a few curious choices like the abbreviated "Hey Jude". If you can't do better than that, just turn it over to Jeff and find a way to insert Mike Huckabee at 8:30!

I don't understand the obsession with "Betcha By Golly Wow" by The Stylistics. I like it, but come on. ::)

I found out where the owner of the station has been. He was back Monday, and as he ended the show on Tuesday he thanked all the people who had sent cards or emails after his wife's death. I'm sorry to hear about this.

One of the songs he played during the all-request part of his show was Taco's "Puttin' on the Ritz". That was a shock back when his station first switched to what was then Westwood One standards. I haven't heard it lately. I like it, but it doesn't fit in very well with all the high-tech stuff, even if the song is a standard.

Did I hear That's All by Genesis? Or, was that a local insert?
No, they played it... this morning, followed by "Angel Of The Morning" which has also been mentioned on here previously.

After hearing those two back to back, I checked the Dial-Global website to see if they were still calling the format Adult Standards. The website's been totally redesigned since the last time I looked at it, but, sure enough, it's still Adult Standards which seems rather perplexing, along with the description '50s, '60s, & '70s. (Granted, that Merrilee Rush song may be from the '60s; a nice hit, but no standard).

I then took a quick glance over on their AC section just to see what the difference was, if any. Well, there is some difference... artists like Daughtry, John Mayer, and Taylor Swift. But there's also a lot of overlap as well... Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Fleetwood Mac, and even Journey.

So, today when we keep hearing how Adult Standards is the kiss of death to advertisers, why wouldn't Dial-Global want to update the format's promotional label the same way they've updated their music selection? Would they attract more affiliates if they dropped '50s and added '80s? How about ditching the name Standards altogether and replacing it with something like AC Gold? Because that's really what they've essentially done.

Some recent new selections heard:
"Taking a Chance On Love" by Steve Tyrell
"Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here" by Doris Day
"My Valentine" by Paul McCartney
"Caroline No" by America

"Talking In Your Sleep" by Crystal Gayle is also in rotation. Not sure if it is a new addition, or if it has been on the playlist before. It has not been heard in a long, long time, if the latter is the case.

When I was a teenager I was riding in a van where 61 Big WAYS was being blasted. It was a class trip to a nearby French restaurant. "Night Fever" to me sounded like heavy metal.

This morning I was amazed at how soft it really is. The four offensive segments aren't really that bad, and the song as a whole is soft enough not to be too far out of place, considering "Love Is in the Air" has been around a while.
