DG makes a few additions

I meant to say last week that the morning DJ, who owns the station, played "Kiss an Angel Good Morning" for that song's 40th anniversary. He occasionally plays some country songs that aren't crossover and the station runs commercials for the Grand Ole Opry. I don't know what this means exactly, but he said he played that song wherever he worked when it was first popular, and he had interviewed Charley Pride many times.

I heard a song this morning on Jeff Rollins' show that really doesn't belong. It followed Dean Martin's "Return to Me" which has those sexy backup singers that can hit those really high notes. I looked up the song, whose title I can't remember now, and aside from the fact the song has some soft vocals that would fit, the only justification seems to be that Frankie Valli sings it. Which would seem to allow "Grease", another song that has no business in this format. But what's really wrong is the loud instrumentals where there are no words.

Is "Diamond Girl" by Seals and Crofts new?

After Dan Peek died, I looked up some information about America after he left and on "You Can Do Magic", they had Russ Ballard from argent doing the instrumentals. Not a good sign, and certainly a good reason for a standards station NOT to play it.

A few off-the-wall tunes this morning but plenty of the good stuff. "Candyman" was on, though that's one even an oldies station could get away with.

Forgot to mention. Charlotte's WAVO still plays plenty of real standards by female vocalists, even if Jeff Rollins, Chick Watkins and Carl Hampton don't.

Not sure if Diamond Girl is new.......heard it yesterday morning. Always been a favorite of mine. Also heard Jeff play "Moondance" recently!

That's one I heard on Timeless Favorites after their change but it seemed okay.

Jeff played "Wheel of Fortune" by Ray Charles. Never heard it, but it's good. Now if they could bring back the Kay Starr version. Or any Kay Starr song.

"Sad Eyes" by Robert John has been around a while, hasn't it? I don't care for the screaming guitar but the rest of it is fine.

"I Go Crazy" by Paul Davis hasn't been on when I was listening in a while. I like the real piano and the violins, but I could do without the aliens.

On the same station, on the local morning show, "Joy to the World" was the Name That Tune song. Traditionally, that song is the first one in the six-pack, the six songs in a row after Mike Huckabee (who replaced Paul Harvey) and the commercial break. But I was relieved "Wild Thing" by The Troggs didn't make it on there when it was the Name That Tune song.

They've played MacArthur Park by Richard Harris twice in the past several days. And not an edited version... the full seven-minute cut. I was astounded.

That is unusual. What's next, "Nights in White Satin"? "Riders on the Storm"?

A more traditional standards station where I live does play the "album version" of "Sing, Sing, Sing" by Benny Goodman. Nothing easygoing about that one. Gene Krupa pounds on those drums.

As the boomers age you will see more sons that don't fit the "MOYL" or Stardust" format as I like to call it.

My mother, who is 70, loves the music from the Grease soundtrack.

Several of the songs listed on this thread now fit the 60-70 age demo.

That doesn't make them right.

Jeff Rollins's show this morning sure sounded like Timeless Favorites. One Sinatra song during the time I listened, between "Never Can Say Goodbye" by Gloria Gaynor (which I do like) and "Dreams" by Fleetwood Mac (which I would like on a country station but it sounds strange here). One other song was a "standard" (maybe) by Bobby Vinton. All the others were the usual oldies or soft AC, though the last song before the clock radio shut itself off was "Last Chance" by Donna Summer. The part of that one I heard actually sounded good.

Today the music was as close to normal as I've heard in a while. "Too Young" by Nat King Cole, "When Sunny Gets Blue" by Johnny Mathis and "Volare" by Domenico Modugno. And when I had the radio on for Mike Huckabee in the afternoon, "Hawaiian Wedding Song" by Andy Williams.

On the other hand, is "Dancing in the Moonlight" by King Harvest new?

"I Can See Clearly Now" aired during an optional commercial break. I'm not sure it's the Johnny Nash version. Something about it sounds different.

And I was reminded last night of something that hasn't been done (I hope). No Michael Bolton. He was added both times my Stardust station did their music locally during the day. The first time, I knew something was wrong when I heard "Time, Love and Tenderness". With a lot of noise that made me wonder if it was the dance remix.

Just heard "Misty" by Sarah Vaughn. Definitely a newbie, and definitely a classic standard.

"Dancing in the Moonlight" is a relatively new addition to the playlist, I think.

Heard "Holding Back the Years" (Simply Red) the other day. Had never heard that one played before.

Although today, Jeff played "Moonlight in Vermont" ... one of my Sinatra favs. This was very ironic since only YESTERDAY I was saying to myself that I'd not heard it in ages!!!! :D

Jeff played Christopher Cross' "All Right"... (Friday morning I believe) That was a bit of a shock!

Did anyone else hear that?

Carl Hampton said the other day they were adding lots of new songs and "You won't believe" what was coming up.

I was hoping for something good, but it was "Another Day" by Paul McCartney, which for me was no big deal.

On the subject of Sarah Vaughn, her biggest hit was "Broken Hearted Melody", which I heard this morning. I didn't hear that she did it, but I'm hopeful.

I also heard a mystery instrumental during the last commercial break of the hour, one which has been around a long time. They always play it during commercial breaks. If my affiliate chooses to run a commercial when they play that particular song, then I'm out of luck, but that wasn't the case this morning. It sounds like either Ferrante and Teicher or Roger Williams, and it's sort of classical. At one point there are singers but they don't sing words.

I was just going to mention "Broken Hearted Melody." According to yes.com it was indeed her version they played. One of my favorite '50s pop hits, glad to hear it's back.

They re-added it a while ago but I've also noticed, along the same lines, that Dinah Washington's version of "Unforgettable" is back as well.

This is good news. When Stardust was "Unforgettable Favorites" they would play the wor "Unforgettable" from her version and half a dozen others.

Maybe they're figuring out we don't like that AC stuff.

Both "Exodus" and "The Apartment" by Ferrante and Teicher will play during the "local option" breaks. "Autumn Leaves" by Roger Williams is heard pretty regularly, but I think it's on the full playlist and not just played during optional breaks.

I also heard "Broken Hearted Melody" this morning. It's a perfect fit.
