RIP 104.7 The Fish

BTW someone on the Religion board posted this about Salem's TCM format:

Just a follow up on this - I got word from someone I know that TCM will continue past 2/1 as it will be absorbed as a secondary format for the folks who own "Christian FM" syndication (basically a second network with different talent). Will be interesting if they keep key talent like "Kevin and Taylor"

I understand Today's Christian Music is based in Atlanta, so perhaps someone can confirm this.

Salem's CCM stations are planning special events for the final week of The Fish:

From the article, “GM Val Carolin, who will stay on with Salem’s other Atlanta radio stations, praised the staff who came out to meet listeners, many of who will be without a job by the end of the week.”

How does this make financial sense to keep the GM? Do WGKA and Faith Talk Atlanta, Salem’s other Atlanta stations, generate enough revenue to justify the salary?

The GM may have a contract that they would have to fulfill in any case. The GM's salary is likely based on billings, which will fall after Friday.

I still can't believe someone hasn't thought about "picking up the pieces". Especially in the Atlanta and Dallas makets. For what it's worth the few times K love has shown up in the 6+ (I know these numbers have no sales value) they haven't really taken a bite out of 104.7 in Atlanta. Without actual numbers one could assume the revenue should not have fell that much except for the general downturn in the industry. My wife listens to the Fish and when I hear 104.7 there still are a lot of commercials.

The SMN 24/7 "Today's Christian Music" format while utilizing a lot of The Fish Atlanta talent was run out of Nashville I believe - it had its own Program Director for example but talent from Atlanta voice tracked it for the most part in recent years (I believe when Salem sold their Nashville stations which was the flagship for TCM this happened but I could be slightly off on that I do know it was tracked - because every few hours they would run an ID at the TOH that said "this program is pre-recorded"). TCM's on air schedule was not 100% the same as 104.7 nor did they run the same music log from what I know. My understanding is another party is taking over "TCM" after 1/31 to give its affiliate's an option of continuing CCM programming.

One example - I know "Keep the Faith w/Penny" which airs in the evenings on TCM and Many of The Fish stations (including 104.7) is going out on its own syndication from what I hear.

Mike Blakemore, the Fish Atlanta’s PD, has overseen TCM since the sale of the Nashville station. If you look at the schedule on their website, it’s 100% The Fish Atlanta’s schedule. Based on their social media posts, Blakemore, and all the talent at TCM don’t have jobs on Monday. It’ll be interesting to see what happens Monday with all new VO talent and new management.

Today's Christian Music - Meet the Talent

Will The Fish stay on until midnight on January 31, or will it have a more high-profile finale?
Yes, according to a promo airing thanking ppl for coming out to the event last Saturday, Penny's Keep The Faith will be the last show on 104.7 The Fish & will sign off for Air1 at Midnight.

i made sure i was in the Greenville market when klove joined 94.5 with its sign off and since i first listened to 104.7 as a teen when it moved in as music radio 104.7 before becoming kiss 104.7 until august of 2000 whewn the fish began

The one thing I hated about the station was all the Christmas music for the last couple of years but I understand why did it. Until this past Christmas they aired normal music on hd2 which was nice.

Listening to the kevin and taylor show for the last time on 104.7fm and its sad. my 2 fave stations die tonight while the fish has mentioned that similar music but not air 1 or that a similar station exists as klove on 106.7fm. yet in dallas they are telling listeners that they will be klove

We don't know that no one has. I've thought since this deal was announced that someone else picking up the Fish staff and launching a CCM station would be pretty smart in Atlanta. While the recent spike in the numbers was probably due to Christmas music, The Fish has been a top-10 station for years, and only Cox has more than one station with higher 6+ numbers during a normal book. Air 1 is a different format, and K-Love has barely put a dent into The Fish since it has been on 106.7. Seems like Atlanta could still support a commercial CCM station. I don't know how much advertising in Atlanta is casino or alcohol. Maybe having to turn those ads down would be too much of a drain on revenue for one of the other operators, but the numbers would certainly seem to be there.

It is true that the other large operators in the market either don't run a format like The Fish or do so very sparingly, but that's no reason they shouldn't consider it. If they know how to do research and interpret data, they can figure it out. Walking away from money because "we've never programmed that format" is stupid.

That wouldn't be the reason. They would need to build the infrastructure around the format to make it work. Look at how iHeart launched Rumba. It wasn't just one station in one market. It was a group of stations in multiple major markets. Given this change involves a lot of markets, it might make sense. But the basic question is how does it fit into the company's national footprint. Not just Atlanta.

The "human infrastructure" is already here. The Salem sales folks are most likely still in town. The PD and air staff have not announced their new jobs. Salem might even let you "rent out" the existing studios. KLove usually just buys the signal. I bet Salem would even let you use "the Fish" for a small fee.
