Sholin, New KFRC Air Team To Debut...

Getting the crap kicked out of you, knocked down and finally get up on one knee when "blam!" they knock you down again, that's what happened the last 8 years of my radio career from 1992-2000. Then when I decided to "dabble" this year, it happened again! (KOMY, Santa Cruz) When KFRC contacted me, I just wanted to help. I was so glad to have the station back, I would do anything, and I was so grateful they thought of me. Mike Preston has told me they (KFRC) want this to be a positive experience for me. I'm most grateful for the opportunity. And thanks to each and every one of you for your support.

John, Congrats on the return. Do what's right for You ! and Joann and your daughter and your grandchild. Those are the people that come first in your life. The rest of us? Well, we are just the listeners who enjoy your work. Thanks for letting us listen again. :)

Amen to that...though I'll also admit to a little disappointment that John is not (yet?) taking on a bigger role.

Couldnt agree more with the previous comments, JMF and his family come 1st, The past 8 years , and the Poor decisions made by these Big Giants overlooked JMF, and drove Bobby Ocean out of his position,,funny how in the 70s RKO catered to these guys, what happened to loyalty and recognition of just who these people are, and what they have done? For Bay Area radio!!! Oh well ,, at least Johns doing The Beatles Sunday, and the"Top of the Hour" Life is good,, Im glad not to hear a peep out of the Ron and Cammy Regime,,,that was by far the worst days of KFRC,, of course thats my opinion,,, Mike Preston,, did you offer anything to Steve Jordan??? or Sam Van Zandt???? Weekends ,, ???? Kenny in Concord

KIFR I agree with your thoughts about JMF aswell I actually had thought about that myself wondering Hmm We all want JMF back on the air but has he realy had it with Radio? Had he been burned one too many times?

Very Pleased to have JMF on the air and if JMF wants more Air time I'm Sure Tim and Mike are working with him, it sounds like a good relationship is in place its just too bad that Radio is so fragile thease days and Corporate Radio could make huge transactions in a week and change everything again.

Its Sad that the Bay Area is so afraid to let the jocks be apart of the Music, Look at New York WCBS has had no problem saying people want music but personalities too, Look at the work that Mike Phillips did in with KRTH, great music and great jocks.

Another thought

The perfect match for the morning show with the Duke would be Candi Chamberlain, they keep doing live auditions looking for the right person.

Tim and Mike find Candi, Candi has great music knowledge similiar to sholin and a cracked wit about herself and has been doing mornings for awhile in Santa Rosa til jumping out of radio recently.

John your sounding Great, Welcome back to KFRC

Candi has been burned by the radio executives a bit too often also. She is doing other things now. It would be nice to have her back on the air too! Once bitten twice shy!

Maybe Dreena Gonzalez should become the night jock at KFRC. Very talented and intellegent!

My thoughts

OK - maybe it's too soon to say it, and I haven't been able to listen often enough (As Baseball is on half the time I tune in) but I'm going to say it anyway:

Outside of the Duke's morning show - which is still a work in progress - I'm disappointed at the pitifully small role being given to the jocks. When I've listened, they seem to be running 4 of 5 song sets (a good thing), but the songs are usually bridged by a pre-recorded announcement by the VO guy, or by a jingle. The jocks usually get one time only between 2 songs in the set to open the mic and say something for 8 or 10 seconds tops.

Then the last song of the set (going into commercial) also ends with the VO guy. The end of the last song on modern FM radio is usually the jocks chance to let loose a little - this was when Bobby Ocean was always at his best in afternoon drive on 99.7. But apparently 106.9's PD won't let them open the mic. On this board, we've all been talking excitedly about the potential jocks and who would be great. If this is all they're allowed to do, who cares? It could be John Mack Flanagan, or they could reincarnate The Real Don Steele, and it wouldn't make any difference.

If you timed Celeste or Jay with a stop-watch, then compared them to their competition on "Less Talk" KOIT, I have no doubt that you'd find Larry Ickes or Lori Sanders are getting more time to talk. Even KOIT management seems to recognize that an afternoon-drive DJ should have a little bit of time to ad-lib, and they let Sanders do that. CBS gave JoJo and Sue Hall much more time at 99.7.

Unfortunately, JMF's recent post about jocks being less and less important these days was right on the money. I wasn't expecting much, but I was expecting more than this.

Lkeller, couldnt agree more, However jocks do make radio . Period end of story, They let Sue Hall ramble, Ron and Cammy Ramble. Huh? Im confused,,so many restrictions now,, the Jock is either boring or holds you to the program, Lee Baby Sims would keep you glued to the radio, where Cammy would let you drift away, John Mack Flanagan holds your interest 100% of the time , he always held my interest, Jay Coffee, doesnt hold a candle to JMF!!!! Never will!!

Boys! - This is a classic hits station, it has to take on a almost classic rock feel to it. It's not the BIG 610. It's only KFRC by calls.

I agree about JMF, Kenny, but I think you kind of missed my point. If they gave John Mack an air shift, but the format restrictions only allow him to open the mic for 15 seconds every 15 minutes, it doesn't mean much. They might as well hire a second rate out-of-town jock to voice track it. Or do a "Jack/Max" and go jock-less.

Duh, really? - I guess that's why I can't hear Tony Bennett on KSFO anymore, either. I know it's not the Big 610, and I don't want it to be. I've enjoyed probably 20 different radio stations in the Bay Area since the Big 610 left the air...what...22 years ago, including Classic Hits 99.7/KFRC before the CBS idiots blew it up. There are Classic Rock and other rock formatted stations that allow the DJs some airtime. The Bone is one of those, by the way. In terms of DJ input, KFRC is sounding more like Star 101.3 to me. They have an afternoon DJ named Darren McPeake, and he's on the air probably 45 seconds an hour. It's a joke.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the music on KFRC (good, so far), or the VO guy (very clever and well done image work).

You are correct Lkeller, they are not giving the others a chance to connect with the listeners. Their V/O keeps on saying 'the spirit of KFRC is back on 106.9'. But the soul of the spirit came from the on-air personalities. Thus the word personality. They are the glue between the music and the listeners. I know I am preaching to the choir, but I agree, let them spread their wings.

Well, it took you folks a while, BUT that's what I said in my 7/18/07 post to this thread. Screw the Spirit, lets have some personality Preston . And BTW Lkeller, I always have respect for what you say here, but the imaging is really not very good. The Voice is OK, but the liners are lame, and there are not enough of them. I have heard the same ones since before they added jocks. They are Burned Out...And since the Image Voice
is who we hear the most, perhaps you could freshen things up.

Liners for a station like this should be smart and funny, but then, they should also let the Airstaff Talk too!
Oh well, I guess this format did'nt come in a 55 Gallon Drum like Movin 99.7 :D ! This one may actually require someone with talent. ;) (and less dancing butts)

The Music is fine, But why do I need to hear Bowies Golden Years at 6 PM on Monday and then on Sholins
show at 7:30 AM Tuesday. Lets have more variety. Classic HITS NOT Classic HIT! Bowie had a few I think.

Er...I was on vacation the week of 7/18 and I'll admit I didn't go back and read all the posts. OK - you were first to say it PB. Happy now?

"I always have respect for what you say here, but the imaging is really not very good. The Voice is OK, but the liners are lame, and there are not enough of them."

You have some nerve. You'd think you were a guy who has experience and talent doing voice over work and promos in radio, instead of a poseur who's never been behind a mic. Oh wait, that's me...

Lew,

I'll tell you why I'm happy NOW, I thought I was the only guy who thought that!!! Good News, Now there are 2 or 3 of us ;).

Oh, and In the future, please clear all your vacation dates with my office so we can avoid this problem again.

You don't need to be behind a mic to have an opinion about radio. I just find myself listening to them to see if
they are ever gonna do anything interesting.

And your hearing that from...
The Finest Production Guy available...In this price range ! ;)

Congratulations to the Gal that gets partnered with Dave Sholan. She will sign the biggest morning contract in SF radio. She will make 40,000 a year. Try making that in Modesto or Fresno. KFRC is back.

Why would they pair Celeste Perry with Dave Sholin? Would she give up her own shift to do mornings? Or have they already decided on Sue Hall and needed to fill the time? OR will Sue get Celeste's slot?

Come on CBS,, leave Celeste on middays,, Sue is at the Wolf,, put Sue on 7 to 12 pm let her try and take the ratings to the top like Sylvia did for many years!!!!!

I don't think Celeste was trying out for the show, I think they have been filing in slots where they had nobody lined up to audition plus it worked out well to promote the A's Game/Root Beer Float Promotion with Dave and Celeste Talking it up all morning.

I don't beleive Katie Mason is in the line up for the job, again I think she was just helping out as they needed to fill space when they had nobody lined up to audition.

And why would Elizabeth Salazar apply for the job, Her husband Bobby Ocean hates CBS so again I think she was just filling in.

It could be they have already made there choice and they need to allow Sue Or who ever the big winner is time to finish up with commitments and contracts.

Driving around the city last night I had KFRC on for about 45 minutes between about 6:45 and 7:30 - presumably the last 15 minutes of Jay Coffey into the first half hour of Steve Moore's program...the KFRC website now lists Steve (the imaging voice) as the night-time DJ.

At NO point in that 45 minutes with 3 commercial breaks did I hear a disc jockey...not once - no Coffey, no Moore. I'm wondering if Steve's "show" just consists of the station playing all his same pre-recorded imagers that they play all day long. And where was Jay? They're really paying this guy money to move back to his native Bay Area just so he can speak for a few seconds every day? Why? Bad voice-tracked shows would be better than what they're doing. Or maybe I missed something, and an As game was cancelled at the last minute (?).

Again - the music is good - but when I've listened outside of the Duke's morning show, KFRC is just a juke-box or I-pod (pick your analogy) with commercials and imaging. Nothing more.
