WNOX call letters

RadioGaGa75 said:
Word on the street is that Pirkle has always dreamed of having those call letters since before the days of Marconi. Now that he has them, count on the WNOX calls staying on 100.3.

Wasn't John Pirkle a big DJ on WNOX in the 60's and 70's?

No, he was on WKGN.

I can say for a fact, and this is first hand knowledge, that the Pirkle boys don't care what the call letters are. It doesn't matter to them if they're WNOX or WOKI or WXVO or WHIG or WROL.

I am pretty sure Pirkle was on WNOX on afternoon drive.

That's a common misconception. He was on WKGN for years before making the jump 15Q.

He worked at WLAR in Athens, WATE 620 in Knoxville, WNOX PM drive for years, then W149 and WOKI. Read John Long's e-book at oidar.com and he mentions his time at WNOX with Johnny.

WKGN didn't have the coverage JP needed to promote all those sock hops and concerts in the outlying armories. That was where the money for WOKI came from. Ask him about his Catmother and the All Night Newsboys concerts.

I don't recall Pirkle ever working for WKGN, but I suppose anything is possible. Right, Halloran?
I can't imagine JP on a 1 kilowatt station. I read here that he started on one, then moved to 5 and 10 kws until he got into management, then ownership. If he did not work at WKGN, how come so many people on here state emphatically that he did? You would think they would be embarrassed to show their ignorance. Unless, of course, they are correct and the guy whose post I read was wrong. Aaaargh! The world is so confusing!

I just realized, if JP started on a low power and worked his way up to a 100,000 watt monster,
it was like Phil Williams in reverse. I know, that was tacky. But clever!

Now I am feeling remorseful for all the people affected by the Citadel trainwreck. How is it possible that people who make millions of dollars a year can sit in Manhattan or Vegas and destroy companies and their employees' futures? Think of the families who will suffer while the suits get rich running companies poorly? Cowboy, pass me the bottle!

Welcome to the corporate world. This is what happens in EVERY corporation, not just radio. This is why our economy is in such a mess.

Nobody in Wall Street has messed over the banks and shareholders more than Fairid Suliman at Citadel. He buys ABC for $ 2.5 billion dollars and in the same years has to write off his investment and six months later banrupts the company!

The closest I can possibly come to being involved in this, unless I persaude someone whose car I'm in to change stations while we're in the mountains, is to remember--after dark--to turn that one radio back on that seems to pick of AM well. I'm not sure about here, but I've picked up WNOX (or WIVK-AM, as it was known then) and WRJZ.

I know in the car with my parents, when I'd just try all the stations, I picked up some of the Knoxville stations. In my motel room, I don't recall even picking up AMs during the day where I stay now, though I could at least pick up WQBB before. Where I stay now, nighttime AM is worthless but surely I picked up 990 AM.

Never mind the explanation. I have an opinion. Put the WNOX letters and Rush Limbaugh back on 990 AM, because oibviously too many people will have trouble with 98.7..

Put "new country" and the WOKI letters on 100.3. There is precedent. WTQR was also so far out in front 12+ its second place competitor couldn't even see WTQR's dust. A couple of years ago, the first competing country station beat WTQR 12+.

Problem with a move back to AM is demographics. There is literally almost nothing on AM in this area besides screaming evangelists, Southern Gospel and Sports.

Well, at least on 990 they'd have a signal.

Maybe some people could hear Rush on 570.

Except for almost no one under 60 listening to AM. There isn't even anything to listen to on AM here..even sportstalk is simulcast on FM. You meant the 570 in the Asheville market?

I suppose the key to that statement is, where is "this area?" I spend a lot of time in West Knox and listen to a lot of AM radio. There is some preachin' and jock sniffin', for sure. But there are also 4 decent country stations (730, 850, 1380 and 1400) with fewer commercials than the Frog and a mix of songs I like better that WIVK. And there are a few good talk shows on 760. Maybe I am rehearsing for when I get to be 60. Anyway, I still like some of the stuff available on AM, like NYC traffic reports on WCBS/880. Hey, Gr8oldies, maybe all you need is a better radio!

I drive a 51 Ford all I got is AM radio and I listen to WOWO out of Fort Wayne and John R on WLAC.

Don't forget South of the Border stuff on 1340, gringo... You may have to cut the roof off with a blowtorch and hang fuzzy dice from your rear view mirror.

For the record I agree with Bill Battle. Unless Citadel can appropriate the call sign, WNOX is not moving anywhere. IMHO, it is extremely risky of them to be promoting anything to the contrary, unless they have a deal to buy the call letters. Surely someone knows someone who knows the answer to this.

I found Pirkle's phone listed on Bluff Shore Drive. Should I call him?

A. For Citadel to get those call letters they would have to start peeling off some serious dollar bills.

B. WNOX isn't going anywhere but up on 100.3

C. That's the kid. The father lives on a farm in Anderson County.
