WQRT RealTalk/Furman factor

OhioMediaWatch said:
About the PPM and news/talk thing:

WLW could run the danger of what's happened in other markets - popular hosts riding on "phantom cume" on large stations.

In 'LW's case, I think people actually LISTEN to their most popular hosts (in particular Willie). In Chicago, PPM did in Steve Dahl...but I don't think it'll happen to Willie. He's "front of mind", not a big name who was a disc jockey 20 years ago coasting on his old fame.

I'd say the same about McConnell, if he was staying.

About the topic...how much attention can Furman garner at a station that has signal problems, particularly in the winter during his show?

I thought that PPM was there to stop the "phantom cume" thing. Folks just writing his name in the diary because he was always their hometown favorite.....
The meter can only log real listening. Cincy has been living with the meter long enough to show that these numbers are real. If LW's numbers drop, it will be a real drop.

There seems to be other threads on various topics and of course others could be created if someone has the interest in other issues.

I suppose the attention to this small station is because of Andy Furman who is a big time name in sports talk and has a loyal following.

I also enjoy seeing a business try to grow and overcome obstacles and I don't care if that is a small outfit or a giant. Same process.
Well, its because you are not a "radio snob" or a competitor (or a perceived one) on this board trying to torpedo someone or someone hiding behind a handle that has an axe to grind. You are an American that likes to see folks succeed. WQRT has been hiring local people. I thought that was a good thing.

The idea was to get other threads going, which more or less failed. Oh well. I only come on here once or twice a month. As for Furman, he was a big time name in sports talk but without the WLW format and Parks built staff feuds and direction, he's in the weeds. His Super Talk shows were awful. Recall one night where he did at least 30 minutes on jousting. No lie. He needs short 4-6 minute segments with lots of spots and service elements to be effective. Points for trying though.

Why don't you start a thread or two and see where they go?

Andy was big time before Parks took over.

Hey Big Boss Hog Radio....perhaps I'm in the minority...perhaps I am biased...but I believe what makes Furman fun, and separates him from the sports-talk pack is topics like: jousting and beer pong...but you probably like Lance McAlister (sp?) and his stat-geek material...Lance would be best served as a director of statistical information for a ballclub or team...hey, let Lance and Furman switch for a week..let's see then who survives...and don't blame Furman for his poor ratings...his station is an island..no promotion..no staff...no sales...he's only 2 of 24 hours of programming...in short, honestly he deserves better...oh, perhaps you like that Nick Brunker better?

Our friend The Mole likes to be thought of as an insider, someone who knows...... He knows not of what he speaks. He is really talking out of his hind end.

Hey jry, with all due respect, how did I misspeak?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Everything but the discussion about Lance V Andy.

To date, there has been 80 grand spent on boards. Some more TV stuff in the works. Hosted the Independence fireworks show on Friday and Saturday. Totally a WQRT event. The station has 4 or 5 sales people including a local sports director.
The very talented Cary Pall is running programming.
Fully staffed, signal being worked on and already has seen some improvements with more to come.
I don't want to get nasty here. Shouldn't the agenda be the positive advancement of all things radio? Shouldn't we
be happy when everyone in this very small fraternity succeeds?

I tuned into the show for the first time yesterday in a long while. It sounded pretty good I thought.

The Kid sounded ok I suppose but Rick didn't add much. I wonder if they're actually helping the show or not (though to be fair I thought the Kid made some well-reasoned points on a few topics). In general though I don't know how I feel about having three guys, even if two are just being used to bounce stuff off of.

Rick is fine when it is just him.

The Kid is like someone wearing too much cologne.

Let me publicly say "thank-you" to jry for the response -- and yes, let's keep this up-beat and in a positive direction.

With that said, certainly Real Talk, perhaps with another local show or two, can possibly make some ground in the marketplace; it's all about promotion and marketing -- I believe the product may be a close second.

As for the Furman Factor -- the lone local weekday show. While I enjoy Furman, and have since his days on the big stick -- I think this Rick character - at least in my mind -- is trying too hard. Trying too hard to be heard -- and now I understand he has his own show on the weekend. Is he trying to compete with Furman. One thing I've learned, and it can pertain to radio as well as life -- open your mouth when you have something (important) and revelant to say...Rick, honestly speaks to hear himself. This Kid makes sense, has his thoughts organized and I honestly like the give-and-take he has at times with Furman. Enough said. Three is too many...you decide who keeps his mouth shut.

Good, constructive comments that should be considered. There is always a better way to do things. Thanks to The Mole.....

I view this board from time-to-time and honestly can't understand the interest and readerrship on WQRT, Real Talk...the ratings should be sky high according to this board.

I miss Jerry but can not believe he wants to get up in the middle of the night or compete with his son.

He actually should be on with his son......

Jerry coming to RT1160?
I am usually the last to know.

Jerry does do one Monday a.m. rant segment with his son and you still hear him do some commercials for long time sponsors.

Here are some nuggets for you: Seems former WLW afternoon voice Gary Burbank is begging for Hall of Fame votes on bis Facebook page -- pathetic...

Dan Brady, the former TV 12 weekend sports anchor now wants to return to town to replace the fired Tara Pachmeyer (sp?) at TV 12.

Lance McAlister, 1530 Homer, has been offered a deal in St. Louis, we hear...
