Reading zumahans' postings carefully I can't help but realize that he is yet another example of the growing number of broadcast professionals who have become disillusioned with HD/IBOC, Ubiquitous cartel/business practices and the awful lie that HD radio is going to "save" free terrestrial broadcasting.

Nothing but good programming produced by talented people will save free terrestrial broadcasting. Somewhere along the way, while the larger radio broadcasting companies were buying up every radio station in sight, the industry has forgotten how to do that.

Technical solutions will NOT solve programming (or people) problems. zumahan realizes this.

However, improved technical quality is also a must. I love the anti IBOC crowd who discount technical improvements by stating that technical alone won't help broadcasters. Other than the music streams much of what the competition provides is re-broadcasts of content produced by old line broadcasters, be they network or syndicated sources. The I-Pod isn't a great source for talent yet it does very well competing for it's audience share. IBOC is progressing nicely and the next few months will be very interesting as more radios come on line. The fact that more manufacturers are producing the radios, especially in this economy is a very good sign for the technology.

Well, it won't! And it is very debatable as to whether or not IBOC is really a technical "improvement", and if it is, whether or not the public is actually interested enough in it to spend money on it.

The I-Pod phenomenon has absolutely nothing to do with HDradio or broadcasting. That device is popular because people like to have THEIR music portable and available at their fingertips.

Maybe future generations of these receivers produced by a wider array of manufacturers will work better than they have thus far. It is no secret that I am very disappointed with the BA Receptor. I have two of them. They were both returned to the factory for "repair". One of them had a sensitivity issue. "No problem" was found with it and it was returned. The other one forgot how to boot up. That unit was replaced and it has the same sensitivity issue that the first one has.

The fact is, I cannot listen to the HDradio carriers of my most favorite AM radio stations in my market. This is very disappointing, to say the least.

The same can be said for any new technology. The only way we will know is to put it out there and see how the public responds. At this point it seems the most anti I-BOC group are those with opposing interests. They aren't honest players in all this.

I must disagree with you. I-PODS, computers etc are all competition for Radio. They provide entertainment and information alternatives and so must be considered competitors. Why do you think many of todays broadcasters are now providing their product as Podcasts?

Why is that? What market are you in where IBOC has made it impossible for you to listen to your local stations? If your favorites are out of market that's something else. This all sounds like the lament of the DXer to me.

Fact is, as the Bridge Ratings show, Wireless Internet and Internet Radio far exceeds HD Radio, and will continue to do so, growing many many more times popular than HD Radio in the future, Wait until Wi-Max brings Internet Radio to portable devices and automobiles in 2008 - HD Radio will receive its death blow.
